Basket Wall Art

August 17, 2010 By Jamie Dorobek 42 Comments

I needed wall art… for my craft room/ office.
It was a  huge b l a n k wall that stared at me all the time!
My other wall art ideas were to use hula hoops, garden hoses, mirrors, paint chips, etc…
Then, while having dinner with a dear friend, I received a torn out magazine page from Better Homes and Garden,  November 2008 issue…an article called Basket Case…. she knows me well 🙂

Baskets… simple, delicate, C H E A P…perfect!

13 baskets cost me $13 from Good Will. I also had to buy 4 cans of turquoise spray paint for a project grand total of $17! Raid your junk drawers people… you are sure to find some fun things in there!

Materials:
  • baskets
  • primer spray paint
  • turquoise spray paint
  • scrapbook paper
  • wrapping paper
  • old greeting cards
  • keys
  • ribbon
  • buttons
  • old jewelry
  • paper cut outs
  • doilies
  • small picture frames
  • mod podge
  • double sided sticky foam tape
  • small nails
  • and basically anything you’ve been saving and thinking, ” I could use this one day!”

First, prime your baskets with any primer spray paint, and while you’re at it, prime any objects that need a color change!
Don’t forget to prime things like keys you might want to use inside of your baskets.

Next, spray paint the baskets and items with your favorite color… Here is the spray paint I used:

I did not worry about spray painting the bottom of my baskets.

Now it gets fun and complicated all at once! Start creating your baskets with whatever floats your boat! Here are some of Annie and I’s ideas.

My crafty friend, Annie, helped think up lots of fun ideas! Next, I attached the paper insides to the baskets. I used double sided foam tape. Now it is time to decide how you want to hang your creations. I don’t mind a few holes in the wall, so I didn’t exactly plan. I just started nailing nails and hanging baskets. I did know I wanted a big basket in the center. Consider using sticky tack first, so that you can move the baskets around on the wall and see what arrangement you like best.

Here is my final basket arrangement…

I love the basket wall art! It’s a lot of bang for a little buck!

I love this idea! Finally, I can do something with all the baskets I’ve accumulated but can bring myself to dispose of. Thank you so much for sharing your idea at This Is How We Roll Thursday.

Such a lovely decorating idea! I have a large empty wall in my dining room, and I haven’t figured out what to put on it yet This is a great idea, and that shade of blue is so pretty!

This turned out so cute! Love the colors and how you used so many things (ideal stash busting!). Thanks for linking it to the Craftastic Monday Link Party at Sew Can Do. I’d love to feature this next week, but can’t find any party page or links anywhere on your blog. I always pin and individually tweet my link features so I’d hate for you to miss out on being featured and getting some extra shout-outs for your great project.

this is too funny! I JUST did the same thing! I collected old baskets and even spray painted them the SAME colour and with the SAME brand! haha great minds think alike! lol
I haven't mounted them yet – I still have to decorate them, but they are painted and ready for me. This colour is the accent colour in my new scrapbook room 🙂 [email protected]

This looked so much like something you'd see on the wall of a retro kitchen/dining area that I was surprised it was your living room! Really cute idea.
    🙂
