What You Need to Tie Dye Your Nails

  • glass bowl
  • room temperature water
  • toothpick
  • a few nail polish colors
  • tape
  • nail polish remover

How to Tie Dye Your Nails

Step 1- Paint a base coat

Paint your finger nails a base coat. I prefer white, but any solid light color will work.

Step 2 – Tape

Use clear Scotch tape to tape around your nails the best you can. Annie used clear tape so it is hard to see!

Step 3 – Bullseye

This process needs to be done quickly to avoid letting the nail polish dry. Fill your bowl up 3/4 of the way with water and drop your nail polish in one after the other to make a bulls eye pattern in the center of your plastic cup.

Step 4 – Multiple colors

Continue forming the bulls eye until you have 6- 12 circles in your bulls eye.  Nail design

Step 5 – Toothpick Design

Use a toothpick to create a design with the nail polish bulls eye.

Step 6 – Dunk your nail

This step needs to be down quickly or else the nail polish will dry. Place your nail, palm up and dip it into the center of the bulls eye. Turn your nail over under the water and pull it out.

Step 7 – Repeat

Repeat steps 3-6 for each nail. You have to make a new bullseye for each nail.

Step 8 – Clean up

Use nail polish remover to clean up around your nails. Or take a hot shower and peel the paint off with your fingers!

I did peacock style patterns using nail polish on mason jars two years ago.But it never occurred to me, that I can use the same technique to paint my nails haha. I love it 🙂
Hope you will share it with our party:

Now for my 9 other fingers.

I used carmax around my fingers it has a vaseliney and chap stick texture togher. I t was easier then tape. But use a good nail polish like opi or sally hanson work the best.

Ive been trying this all day. I keep changing the water and when I drop the nail polish in the water the nail polish instantly turns into the film lining. What am I doing wrong? Please respond asap. Thank you

That is most likely it is because of the quality of nail polish you are using. Also, are you using purified water… I’ve heard that helps!

why does my nail polish keep sinking to the bottom of the cup no matter what brand I use? My daughter got it to float on top one time but it hardened before we could add all the drops and swirl them with a tooth pick. Help please 🙁

Nail polish quality is very important… Maybe try OPI?

As long as the nail polish typically would last.

I really love this, but when I tried it the polish was drying faster than I could drop another drop. Will have to try it with better nail polish.

I finally tried this! It was fun and kind of worked… I didn’t have white for a base coat, so my colors aren’t as pronounced. I will also try the vasaline/chapstick suggestions next time.
I had some trouble with getting tiny bubbles of water under the tiedye coat. Did anyone else? Does anyone have suggestions for color or drawn patterns that really look good?

I was really excited to try and do this to my nails, but I couldn’t get the polish to drop fast enough before the previous one started to form a skin. I tried shaking the polish brush and tapping it and that didn’t really work either. And even when I did get a few drops in quickly and tried to do the design, it just clung to the toothpick. Any tips on how to get the polish in more quickly?

Use chap stick around your fingers instead of tape works extremely well and you can just wipe right off! easy to get right close to your fingernail just make sure there is none on your nail or the paint wont stick!
