Free Things To Do In Richmond, VA

May 3, 2011 By Jamie Dorobek 5 Comments

Ready for the first post of Creating Really Awesome Free Trips this summer? Today we are traveling to Richmond, VA with  Linda @ Craftaholics Anonymous.

Free Things To Do in Richmond, Virginia

Richmond, Virginia is a city full of history and fun! I’ve lived here for 5 years now and absolutely love it! If you’re visiting in the summer, be prepared for some hot, humid weather and bring a water bottle.

1. Maymont:

Maymont is a huge estate with gardens, farm animals, and a few exotic animals. Admission is free, but you have to pay to tour the homes and feed the animals. Walking around is free and parking is free. For an additional fee, you can take a golf cart tour or a carriage tour of Maymont’s 100 acres of rolling hills.

2. James River Tube Floate

During the summer months, you can float down the James River on tubes. Be sure to wear life vests and be careful of undercurrents and rocks.

3. Holocaust Museum

This museum is a headphone tour of one man telling his story of surviving the Holocaust as you walk through different sets depicting his journey. The man of the voice your hear on the tour visits the museum frequently and I have met him. Very well put together and makes the Holocaust real. I’ve been several times with different family members and each time I learn something new.

4. Hollywood Cemetery

I’m not a huge fan of cemeteries, but this one is really cool. There are 2 presidents buried there, confederate soldiers, and all kinds of really neat headstones all set with a gorgeous view of the James River.

5. Brown Island

Browns Island is a renown music venue, but it also home to walking and cycling pathways. There are views of Belle Isle, the Manchester Bridge, and the ruins of the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad Bridge.

6. James River Park and Trails

There are 550 acres of shoreline trails to hike in the middle of Richmond on the James River! Memorial Day through Labor Day you can swim at an urban beach on the river or walk across the pedestrian pathway that connects Brown’s Island and Manchester. The pathway sits atop a former hydroelectric dam, some 20 feet above the river.

7.  Swift Creek Reservoir

I live close this reservoir and it’s a gorgeous 1,700 acre man made lake. Motorized boats are prohibited, but you can rent boats, canoes, paddle boats, kayaks, to go out on the water for 2 hours of quiet, relaxation.

8.  Stony Point Mall Fountain

The mall has water foundations that is great for the kids to play in on a hot, humid summer day. Don’t forget towels!

9. White House of the Confederacy

The The White House of the Confederacy is located in downtown Richmond, and served as the Executive Mansion of the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865, when Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy. You can get really close to the mansion and take pictures next to the building, but you have to pay to take the tour. There is also a pretty little garden behind the house, perfect for a picnic. The tour costs $12 for an adult, but kids 5 and under are free.

Pro tip: Call 804.649.1861 to schedule a White House of the Confederacy house tour.

Good post. I grew up in Richmond. It’s a gorgeous city. Lots of stuff to do and like you say it’s free. If you want to get out of Richmond, take a quick day trip – you can go North(DC), East(the beach), or West(the mountains). We used to go down to the University of Richmond and fish and feed the ducks; another beautiful area.
