Earl is a bad squirrel. He is ripping out my ivy like a mad man. How can I stop him? Any ideas? There are 6 plants total, and we are down to 1. He actually did this all about 4 weeks ago. I think he knows he was bad, because he has not been back since the 5th plant was dug up. I’m over his cuteness. Can you see the corn kernel in his mouth?
Ok, maybe he is not such a bad squirrel…

But, then check out Earl in action…
p.s. HERE are more Earl pictures.
I heard something similar about sprinkling garlic powder over the plants… it taints the taste of the plant because when it mixes with water the roots actually soak up some of it. It's supposed to help keep rabbits away too. It's worked for me!
We have a squirrel that ate up our veggie patch. You can try sprinkling cayenne pepper on your plants. It causes them to sneeze. You have to reapply after rain or lots of watering.
Too funny! (well, only because MY ivy is not getting ripped out…) I say try the squirrel statue!
I've had some success with sprinkling pelletized urine on them. yes, it sounds gross, but it seems to work. I think the kind I have is fox urine and I found it at the hardware store. You have to re-apply after a few rains though. I neglected one pot and all of my impatiens were dug out.
But then again I have crazy city quirrels that chew through coolers, city garbage cans and more to get at what they want- the last being the underside of the facia on my attic. grrrr….
In my opinion there is nothing cute about them!
Question is? where did the ivy go? Maybe making a nest? Have fun. LOL
We have a naughty squirrel in our yard too! He drives my Great Dane nuts!
I'm sad to say that this is completely normal squirrel behavior. My parents have trouble with squirrels year after year. My mother can't even put out pots of her favorite plant, rose moss because the squirrels literally pull it out by the roots and eat it.
The only thing that's helped (slightly) is putting out a little statue of another squirrel. Not sure why it has helped, but it's worth a shot, if you want to keep your ivy! Good luck!
