C.R.A.F.T. #73: Giant Framed Thumbprints

February 22, 2011 By Jamie Dorobek 29 Comments

My thumbprints were actually a surprise Christmas gift from the BF πŸ™‚ I’ve always thought having giant thumbprints portraits would be neat… kind of like a family portrait that never gets old… since your fingerprints never change. I guess I’d mentioned this before, and he REMEMBERED!

His little brother, Casey, is in photography school in NYC [AWESOME, right?!]. The BF insisted that he needed our fingerprints for a photography project he was working on… seemed legit! One night we do this: [thank goodness I take pictures of everything…these are the only 2 I have!]Β

* Buy regular film and have it developed! Make sure to let the film guy know the roll is blank…this is what you want πŸ™‚

We used this ink pad:

and made thumbprints all over the old school film…we sent them off to NYC for the supposed photography “project”.Β  Then these came back to me in the mail in a giant tube:

LOVED them πŸ™‚ Took me awhile to decide on framing… priced a lot of places and finally decided on good ‘ol Hobby Lobby!Β  Amazingly enough, the actual frames were only $12.00 each, half price of course. You can check out the receipt below to see the break down…framing is not cheap, but makes them look so pretty πŸ™‚

and here they are framed πŸ™‚

i LOVE them πŸ™‚ Thank you, Andy!

The only slightly sad thing is the basket wall art is going to Good Will πŸ™

Hi Jamie! Wondering how a non-photography student could make this at home. Get a good thumb print on white paper and just blow it up x 100 at Kinkos? This is so unique, I love it! Let me know what you think a good DIY method would be πŸ™‚

That is so cool! It reminds me of when the hubs used his thumbprint for a sign on the side of a printing business. I loved being reminded of him driving around town. LOL

Oh My! Amazing! How cool! Ok, so I would like to know how to make these too. I have a lot of blank negative ends that I haven't gotten rid of yet from my "film" photography days. These are so creative and interesting. I can see making a whole wall grouping of my family's fingerprints. Thanks a bunch for sharing and showing!!!

It was so nice meeting you at Bloggy Boot Camp Austin. feel free to e-mail me anytime if you wanted to finish our conversation from lunch. πŸ™‚ I feel like we didn't get any time after that. I was cornered at the coctail party and wasn't able to mingle as much as I would have liked. πŸ˜‰

I think these would be fabulous Father's Day or Mother's day gifts. What did you guys do with the negatives after you put your fingerprints on them? Did they get sent to the photo developers like that or did his brother have to do something to them?

This is so cool! I have the same question as Yvonne. How does the print get on the paper?
Is there a special place it's sent or just copied…?

These are seriously so cool. They remind me of a project Candace Olsen did on HGTV. What a great way to have 'personal' art!
