kid c.r.a.f.t. #16: Ice Painting

June 7, 2011 By Jamie Dorobek 15 Comments

Have you ever painted with ice?

My highschool bestie, Annie, is a preschool teacher, and has some great summer crafts she is going to share with us on C.R.A.F.T. First up, ice painting.

Materials for Ice Painting:

  • liquid watercolor
  • tape
  • toothpicks
  • paper
  • ice trays

Step 1 – Fill ice cube tray

Fill an ice cube tray with 90% liquid water color and 10% water.

Step 2 – Tape

Stick a strand of tape directly on top of the ice cube tray, as shown in the picture below. This is so the toothpicks (handles) will stay in place while freezing.

Step 3 – Freeze

Stick the ice cube trays in the freezer for a few hours.

Step 4 – Remove the tape

Simply remove the tape and help the kids get the ice cubs out of the ice cube tray. Now, it’s time to paint!

Thanks for sharing this idea. We recently had an ice cream party for our daughter’s third birthday. This was one of the activities that we decided to do with all of the kids. It was a huge hit and turned out perfectly!!!

I love this idea for an outdoor activity to do in our hot Texas weather….. will food coloring work just as well or should I go out and find the liquid watercolor? If so, where do I find it? Thank you!!!!

This sounds like quite a cool idea!
I think I´m trying this, but with foodcoloring, since my kids are used to licking icecubes, and I don´t think they could resist here 🙂
