Thrift store table makeover {paint wood furniture}

October 25, 2012 By Jamie Dorobek 21 Comments

I brought this bad boy home from a thrift store when I first moved to FL… oh 7 months ago! I actually almost didn’t buy it, I posted it on C.R.A.F.T. facebook, and before I left the store it had 44 likes, so I bought it… thanks to y’all! And I’m so happy I did.

For $15 this sucker was a steal… It even has dove tailed drawers! Here she sits in the store, in my car, and showing off her dove tailed joints…

I wanted to use Annie Sloan paint on this table  but I’m impatient and don’t have anywhere close to buy it. My next choice would have been spray paint, but my no yard situation makes spray painting anything bigger than a picture frame very tricky. So, I opted for a fancy quart of paint from Home Depot. I say fancy because I bought the Glidden brand primer + paint in one. It worked like a charm, and the dresser only needed one coat! There was an at the cash register rebate, so I got the quart of paint for $10. I knew I wanted the top to be a wood/ paint pattern so, I bribed Andy to help me sand! He used an electric sander to make the top paint free and roughed up the sides.  Here’s some action shots:

This is me photographing through the door… that sander is loud!

After she was sanded, I wiped her down really good with a wet rag to remove all of the dust. I vacuumed out the inside, and let it dry. I did really, I was patient! I taped off the top with frog tape since I had a different plan for the top of the table. Then I flipped the table upside down, and used a itty bitty brush to paint the bottom.

While I waited for the bottom of the table to dry, I painted my new World Market owl knobs white. I kind of love these little guys!

After the base of the table was dry, I started working on the top. I didn’t have a major plan, I just knew I wanted something with some wood showing.  I eyeballed the deign because I figured that as long as it looks good to the eye, what’s a centimeter or 2!

And know for this most fun part of the table… taking the tape off to reveal your lovely design…

…voila!  I love it!

How to paint furniture

I screwed in the newly painted owl knobs, slid in the drawers, and started styling my new entry way table…

Here’s one of the whole she-bang…

And a good ol’ before and after…

I love the new look! And what I love even more is that I discovered how fun it is to make patterns with tape! Have you made over any furniture lately? Or done any tape patterns? I’d love to hear…

I love this Jamie! I featured it in my DIY project round-up. I want to somehow to a big dresser top with this technique sometime.

It looks amazing! I just love that! So did you do anything to the sanded top? Stain it or seal it with anything? Thank you!

I am so loving the painted wood/natural wood combo lately and you rocked the geometric pattern too. Super cool piece, girl!

At the top instead of brown use white, it is a perfect color combination for gray.

I love how it turned out! It looks like a houndstooth pattern but a little more geometric. (at least what I can see from the first picture, the rest of the pictures are taking for ev er to load). Paint tape is pretty awesome, I used it to make a crazy accent wall. I even used it to make a pattern from my favorite skirt so I could make another one!
