12 Electrical Tape Crafts

March 2, 2022 By Jamie Dorobek 5 Comments

Who knew a roll electrical tape can transform any wall, door, floor, or even hula hoop. These 12 electrical tape crafts will make you re-think that five dollar roll of black electrical tape in your junk drawer.

What is electrical tape made of?

Electrical tape is typically made out of a stretchy vinyl material that is designed to insulate an electrical current. It’s also intersting to note that electrical tape comes in different colors, typically blue, black, red, yellow, and white. Here’s a colorful pack of electrical tape. Electrical tape also comes in different thickness, I really like the 3 in thick black vinyl tape for crafting purposes.

Now that we know what electrical tape is made of let’s find some unique uses for the vinyl tape!

1. Wall treatment

Electrical tape makes a great wall treatment for a rental because it is easily removable and does not rip off paint. Read more about my experience using electrical tape as a wall treatment in your rental here. Bottom line: Curves are much harder to create and they fall off faster.

2. Kitchen Appliance Update

These plain white kitchen appliances got a quick makeover with black electrical tape. It absolutely adds a touch of whim and makes this Finnish kitchen stand out.

3. Electrical tape stripes

4. Modern wall art

If you’re looking for a wall treatment with even more spunk, use electrical tape to create a peice of art. This electrical tape wall art also utilizes a few sheets of acetate. Find more details at Curbly.

5. Wall art

Trish turned 3 blank canvases into fun wall art with electrical tape and 4 paint colors. It is fair to note that painters tape would work just as well in this instance. Find the full tutorial at Techniques by Trish.

6. Electrical tape rug

Use electrical tape to make a statement on the floor! Create any pattern using colorful vinyl tape. Best part? When a section gets messed up, just re tape! More details in the NY Magazine.

7. Modern floor treatment

Here is another example of brightly colored electrical tape being used as a rug.

8. Shelf illusion

Use black electrical tape to make the illusion of shelves! Find more images at Oh So Beautiful Paper.

9. Wall art

This art teacher used electrical tape to make a giant Carl from Where the Wild Things Are on the wall of her art room. I bet the kids loved it! See more at This Little Blog of Mine.

10. Door design

With one roll of black electrical tape and a lot of patience you can give a plain white door a bold pattern. See more details from Netta.

11. Electrical tape signs

Use electrical tape to make signs to inform guests. Below is a warning side of a potential tripping hazard, but vinyl tape could be used to share any information including wifi passwords or directions!

12. Fancy hula hoops

Give the kids a few rolls of electrical tape and let them decorate hula hoops. What a fun summer idea or birthday party activity. Find out more on Soule Mama.

Who would have thought that electrical tape could make such an impact on design? Have you ever used electrical tape for things other than taping wires?

I loved all these electrical tape uses. I recently saw a really cool lamp shade made out of cris crossed black electrical tape on a white paper shade. I am hoping to do one for my nursery in baby colors.

We used it to tape up our field hockey sticks for grips. We had fun using lots of different colors 🙂
