C.R.A.F.T. #93: Re-Fashion Ideas from a button down shirt

January 18, 2012 By Jamie Dorobek 1 Comment

All you need for this C.R.A.F.T. is an extra large button down shirt.

(Please, don’t mind my deer in the headlight smile…trying to take pictures of yourself is way harder than I thought it was going to be!)

I found mine at Good Will for $4.99… Just for fun,  I went home and looked up the brand (Ike Behar)… That’s right, I’m fancy 🙂 This sucker sales for $98.50 at Nordstroms.

Any button down will work… but, a button down that doesn’t have a pocket will make things a tad easier. Sleeve length doesn’t matter since I roll mine up. But be mindful of this when Good Will shopping… don’t buy one with extra long arms or anything.

Put the giant shirt on inside out, pin at the armpit a comfortable amount that you want to take in (I took in 3 inches on both sides)

I just used a regular ‘ol pen… if you mess up, just re-mark it.

Next, mark down the side of the shirt. There are 2 ways to do this depending on the look you want.

1: Sew straight down from the armpit to the bottom of the shirt, and then seam rip later to make slits up the side. (I did this on accident the first time, I forgot I had hips and a butt!)

2: Sew with your hips in mind which means the line will curve outward.

Next sew the from the armpit to the hand. I did not want to mess with the cuff so I only marked and sewed a slanted line from the armpit point about 3/4 of the way down the sleeve. Since I’m rolling up the sleeves anyway it doesn’t really matter. See my fancy pen marks below.

Do the exact same thing to the the side.

Does anyone else have a Good Will obsession? What is your best ever Good Will find? Here are a few of my favorite finds:
