DIY Painted Shoes

April 13, 2012 By Jamie Dorobek 13 Comments

Aztec is the new chevron of fabric… Have you noticed it everywhere? I am loving it. I bought this pair of Gap Keds for $10 at Plato’s Closet in Austin before we moved to Florida. I bought them with the intention of spiffing ’em up, but what do you know… 4 months later and they are still sitting pretty looking just like the day I bought them.
Then inspiration struck. Thank goodness. I’ve been feeling very un-crafty and un-inspired as of late. Does that ever happen to you? I was inspired by these nails on Pinterest:
and then a lovely little package that came in the mail from Elmer’s that included fun new colors of paint markers… along with lots of other goodies.
All you need for this project is a few paint markers and a pair of shoes. Paint Markers come with different tips. See at the bottom of the marker? It is very important that you have at least  a black fine tip painter. It works wonders for outlining.

I started with a few doodles to practice using my painters. Then I started drawing my lines… The painters are a lot like nails polish. To get the most vivid color, let the lines dry and then go over in the same color. Obviously, the more you go over them, the darker they get.

I stared outlining with the fine tip black.

I decided I did not want both shoes identical. I would let one shoe dry, while I started doodling on the other.  See the left shoe, I tried circles. I didn’t love them and decided to make it a straight line.

I went over and over the color. I’m telling you the black fine tip is your friend.  I almost thought I was done, but decided to do a little more outlining.

And I’m happy I did.

I walked to grocery store in them, came home and added more black details. Can you spot the 2 differences? One on each foot 🙂

Here’s a close up…

Have any shoes that need an update? What do you think of mine… Better after? Do you ever loose crafting momentum for a period of time? I’m pretty excited to whip out my Paint Markers again. I’m feeling a lot more paint maker projects in my future!
