C.R.A.F.T. # 59: Thirfty College Apt.

August 30, 2010 By Jamie Dorobek 15 Comments

I’ve recently come across some fun dorm blogs…
which made me reminisce about my
studio apartment from college…
I was thrifty and very colorful… I’m still thrifty, but I think my
color palette has calmed down just a tad…
studio apartment
The living room… my parents lovely plaid coach with a slip cover, lots of wal-mart picture frames that came from my high school bedroom, door turned full length mirror, and lots of homemade pillows…

This picture basically shows the whole apartment…you can see how my bedroom was a little offset from the living room, and the kitchen is tiny and behind the wall…

My mom and I made this table… well, I got the table for free from a restaurant that was going out of business. We spray painted the whole thing white, and bought a set of plates on super sale at TJ Maxx. We smashed the dishes in a pillow case, used resin to hold them in place. My mom sewed the chair cushions, thanks mom!  I got 4 chairs for $10 at a church garage sale!

I made the table cloth for my desk and used upholstery tacks to make it fit and stay perfectly…HERE and HERE are posts on the canvas fashion above the desk. The little coffee table is one of the only things still left in my current house…although it has since been stripped and given legs and is now used as a side table 🙂 The shag leather rug came from the clearance section of urban outfitters…man, I was so happy to find that rug on sale 🙂

Oh and check out my 5 legged stool that I made in wood shop class in college!
studio apartment
My bedroom nook… I put put shutters on my window instead of curtains, and made myself a yarn web for displaying pictures. My mom gave me the “head board” which was leftover wrought iron garden pieces. My bed spread was the most expensive thing in my whole house… and it was a MAJOR splurge from Anthropolgie. I liked it there. Mostly. My tiny space was cute, but it was a sketchy part of campus! If you know UT at all, you know that living on West Campus by yourself in a run down complex is kinda scary! What did your college apartments look like?

I want to live in this apartment. Not with my whole family, Husband, kids, cat, dog & fish. No. Just me.

Your former efficiency apartment looks like it was loads of fun to do and live in. Shows what you can do for not much money and a lot of creativity. Well done! Pam @ Sallygoodin

It's so cute! I like all the colors! I love bright colors…it was a point of contention for me and my hubby when regestering. But, I got at least one bright room and I add little splashed here and there!
